For 25 years, the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law at The Maldives National University has made a significant contribution to the advancement of legal education in the Maldives. From its modest beginnings, the faculty has developed into an established centre of academic learning, contributing to the development of the legal profession, the strengthening of institutional capacity, and the promotion of justice and the rule of law. Its twenty-five-year journey reflects the enduring importance of higher education in developing the knowledge, expertise, and professional values necessary for national progress.
The faculty’s development has been shaped by the collective contributions of its academic and administrative staff, students, graduates and institutional partners. The dedication of its staff, the commitment of its students, and the achievements of its graduates and the professional accomplishments of its alumni have played an integral role in advancing its academic mission. Graduates of the Faculty now serve in judiciary, legal practice, public institutions, and other areas of national development. Their contributions demonstrate the faculty’s role in developing legal professionals equipped to serve institutions, uphold professional standards, and contribute to the administration of justice in the Maldives.
The celebration of the faculty’s twenty-fifth anniversary was further distinguished by the presence of the University’s Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and members of the academic and administrative community. Their participation reflected the institutional significance of this milestone and the University’s continued commitment to advancing legal and Shari’ah education. The occasion provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of those who established and developed the faculty, recognise the efforts of its present academic community, and reflect on the achievements and institutional progress attained over the past quarter-century.
In an increasingly complex legal and social environment, the faculty recognises the importance of ensuring that legal education remains academically rigorous, professionally relevant, and responsive to emerging developments. Accordingly, it remains committed to providing high-quality education that integrates substantive legal knowledge with practical competencies, analytical reasoning, and professional ethics. Through continuous improvement in teaching and learning, promotion of research, engagement with the legal profession, and the responsible integration of emerging technologies into legal education, the faculty seeks to prepare graduates capable of addressing contemporary legal challenges with competence, integrity, and sound professional judgment.
Through its commitment to accessible, relevant education, advancing legal awareness, and engagement with professional institutions and the wider community, it contributes to broader national and international development objectives. In particular, its work is closely aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education, through the provision of relevant learning opportunities and the advancement of educational standards; Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, through the development of legal knowledge, ethical professional practice, and an informed understanding of justice; and Sustainable Development Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through cooperation with legal institutions, public authorities, and other stakeholders. These areas of alignment underscore the significance of legal education in strengthening institutions, promoting accountability, and supporting sustainable development.
Looking ahead, the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law will build on this legacy by strengthening academic standards, encouraging critical and independent thinking, expanding practical learning opportunities, and fostering a culture of research and community engagement. Its ambition remains to educate future generations of legal professionals who are not only knowledgeable in law and Shari’ah but also committed to fairness, integrity, and the public good.
As the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law marks twenty-five years of achievement, this milestone offers an opportunity to express appreciation to all those who have contributed to its establishment, development, and continued advancement. It is also an occasion to acknowledge the achievements of its students and alumni and to reaffirm the faculty’s commitment to the responsibilities entrusted to institutions of higher learning. Building upon the foundations established over the past quarter-century, the faculty looks towards the future with a renewed commitment to academic excellence, professional development, research, and service to society. Its continuing mission is to contribute to the advancement of legal and Shari’ah education and to support the development of a knowledgeable, ethical, and professionally competent legal community in the Maldives.
