The Maldives National University (MNU) successfully hosted another engaging session of the MNU Speaker Series on 4 May 2026, featuring distinguished architect, urban planner, and resilience expert Fathimath Rasheed. Her presentation, titled The Choices That Shape Practice: Negotiating the Space Between, offered participants a thought-provoking reflection on the values, experiences, and decisions that shape professional practice in the built environment.
Drawing on more than 30 years of experience across architecture, planning, policy, research, and community engagement, Fathimath shared insights from her work throughout the Maldives, where she has collaborated with communities across the atolls on projects relating to housing, land use planning, urban development, resilience, and strategic planning. Through personal reflections and professional experiences, she encouraged participants to consider the complex choices practitioners make in balancing technical expertise with social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and ethical decision-making.
The session explored the dynamic relationship between the natural and built environment in the Maldives, highlighting the importance of working across disciplines to create communities that are sustainable, resilient, and responsive to local needs. Fathimath spoke about navigating the space between thimaveshi and binaveshi, between professional obligations and personal values, and between what is possible and what is right. She emphasised that meaningful practice is shaped not only by knowledge and competence but also by care, curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to serving communities.
Participants also gained valuable insights into her contributions to national development, including her leadership in land use planning during the 2004 Tsunami Recovery and Reconstruction Programme, her work in developing national planning and regulatory frameworks, and her research on climate resilience and sustainable housing. Her discussion underscored the importance of integrating resilience into planning and design as the Maldives continues to respond to the challenges of climate change and sustainable development.
The session formed part of MNU’s ongoing commitment to exposing students and staff to distinguished professionals whose work demonstrates the impact of interdisciplinary thinking, innovation, and public service. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, the MNU Speaker Series continues to inspire students to become reflective professionals who contribute meaningfully to the development of the Maldives.
The event also reinforced MNU’s commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting lifelong learning and professional dialogue; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through discussions on sustainable planning, resilient infrastructure, and community-centred development; SDG 13: Climate Action, by highlighting the importance of climate resilience in planning and design; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, by encouraging collaboration between academia, government, industry, and local communities to address national challenges.
