The Department of Dhivehi Language and Culture, Faculty of Arts, The Maldives National University (MNU), conducted a Dhivehi Bahuge Dhuvas celebration on 19 April 2025 as part of its Term 1 academic activities. The event brought students together through a range of educational, literary, and cultural activities centred on the Dhivehi language.
The celebration was organised to strengthen students’ appreciation and understanding of the Dhivehi language, literature, and Maldivian cultural heritage. Through active participation in language and cultural activities, students were provided with opportunities to engage with the national language beyond conventional classroom learning.
Students enrolled in the Dhivehi for Professionals course participated in a variety of activities designed to apply their linguistic knowledge and communication skills in practical settings. The activities enabled students to demonstrate their learning through experiential and participatory approaches, connecting academic content with practical language use.
The programme also provided opportunities for students to develop communication, creative expression, teamwork, and participation skills while engaging with Dhivehi literary and cultural activities. By incorporating practical activities into the learning experience, the celebration supported student-centred learning and the application of knowledge in real-world contexts.
As part of the academic programme, several activities also contributed to student assessment. This provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their learning and competencies through practical engagement, complementing classroom-based academic activities.
The celebration concluded with an award ceremony recognising high-achieving students and competition winners. Trophies were presented to students in recognition of their achievements and participation, encouraging continued engagement in Dhivehi language learning and related academic and cultural activities.
The initiative contributed to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with experiential learning opportunities and enabling them to apply linguistic knowledge and skills in practical contexts. It also supported SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting appreciation of Dhivehi language, literature, and Maldivian cultural heritage, contributing to the continued awareness and preservation of local cultural identity.
