Solar Panels at MNU Facilities

Solar panels have been installed at both the Central Administration (CA) buildings in Male’ and Hithadhoo Campus (HC), marking an important step towards sustainable energy use at The Maldives National University. This initiative reflects MNU’s commitment to environmental responsibility by reducing carbon emissions, lowering energy costs, and promoting renewable energy practices within the university community.

 

Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Hons)

Work to develop new curriculum Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Hons) course was carried out in 2024. The new degree course was launched in 2025. opens up dynamic career opportunities in areas ranging from power systems and renewable energy to computer engineering and telecommunications. This program equips students with specialized knowledge and practical skills to meet national industry demands-especially in supporting green energy initiatives and technological advancement.

White paper on sustainable marine transport

Candela, the world leader in electric hydrofoil technology has published a new white paper. It details a strategic path for the Maldives to protect invaluable marine ecosystems. The plan also aims to enhance the nation’s luxury tourism sector. The white paper is titled “A modern solution for protecting sensitive marine ecosystems with the Candela P-12.” It was developed with the Centre for Maritime Studies at The Maldives National University. In addition, the paper presents the Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferry as a comprehensive solution to the environmental and operational challenges facing the island nation. At the same time, the document identifies a critical conflict where the diesel-powered boats essential for tourism are actively harming the fragile ecosystems that are the nation’s greatest asset.

MNU Becomes a Member of the International Zero Carbon Island Coorperation Orgaisation

October 2025

The Maldives National University reently became a member of the International Zero Carbon Island Coorperation Orgaisation. As the member, MNU will support the preparatory work of the Cooperation Organization, actively participate in related activities, and promote the sound and sustainable development of the Cooperation Organization.Global climate change presents a shared challenge for all humanity. Islands, being particularly vulnerable, now face severe threats to their survival. Strengthening their climate resilience and identifying equitable pathways for a just transition have become urgent priorities. The development of zero-carbon islands—through the promotion and implementation of advanced low-carbon technologies and initiatives—offers a vital solution. Facilitating a comprehensive green transition across sectors such as industry, energy, transportation, community infrastructure, and daily living practices represents a key strategy toward achieving sustainable, low-carbon island development.

Workshop on Development of GHG-related Standard Training Package and Digital Training Tool in Shanghai

21 October 2025 to 23 October 2025

A specialized workshop focused on developing a Standard Training Package and Digital Training Tool related to greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, which aligns with the IMO GHG strategy, was held in Shanghai from 21–23 October 2025. The programme was co-organized by the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA) with institutional support from Shanghai Maritime University.

More than 30 delegates representing 15 countries and regions, including China, Belgium, Japan, Turkey, the Philippines, Montenegro, Malaysia, Egypt, Singapore, Jamaica, the Maldives, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and Australia, participated in the workshop.

A keynote presentation with the title “Building Capacity for Green and Low-Carbon Shipping in Small Island Developing States: Challenges and Pathways through Digital Maritime Training” was delivered by The Maldives National University, Centre for Maritime Studies. More keynote presentations were delivered by delegates from China, Belgium, IAMU, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Singapore, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Montenegro, and Wartsila.

Discussions were held on developing the standard digital training package covering the IMO GHG strategy and STCW competencies.

High end Training on maritime education towards greener shipping

September 2023

A professional training programme on maritime education with a focus on sustainable and greener shipping practices was held in September 2023 in Shanghai and was attended by The Maldives National University, Centre for Maritime Studies. The training programme was organised by Shanghai Maritime University and the International Maritime Lecturers Association

The sessions addressed contemporary and emerging challenges in the global shipping sector as we transition to alternative fuels and greener technologies that are introduced in alignment with the IMO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) strategy

Overall, the initiative acted as a key forum for enhancing collaboration among IMO, maritime universities, and training organizations. It enabled the sharing of forward-looking policies, regulatory developments, and emerging technologies that support environmentally sustainable maritime operations. In addition, it helped reinforce capacity-building efforts and further promoted high-quality maritime education that aligns with international goals for green and sustainable shipping
