Second-year Bachelor of Arts in Media and Public Relations students, in collaboration with the MNU Student Union, organised a blood donation event at Orange Hiyaa to mark World Thalassemia Day. The student-led initiative brought together members of the community to support voluntary blood donation and raise awareness of the importance of blood donation for patients and families affected by thalassemia.
The event provided students with an opportunity to apply their communication and public relations skills to a community-focused initiative. Through their involvement in organising and promoting the blood donation drive, students contributed to public awareness while gaining practical experience in community engagement, teamwork and social responsibility.
The initiative received national attention when President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu visited the event while the blood donation drive was underway. During his visit, the President interacted with students who were participating in the donation and recognised their leadership and community engagement. He also encouraged the students to continue using their public relations skills to support the national thalassemia community and contribute to initiatives that create positive social impact.
By connecting academic learning with community service, the initiative provided students with practical opportunities to use their communication skills for a public health-related cause. The collaboration between students and the MNU Student Union also demonstrated the value of partnerships in mobilising communities and supporting initiatives that address shared social needs.
The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Well-being, 4: Quality Education, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
