Social Work Students Gain Practical Learning Experience Through Visit to HPSN

12 April 2025

Students from the Bachelor of Social Work programme visited the Home for People with Special Needs (HPSN) on 12 April 2025, providing them with valuable first-hand exposure to residential care services for people with diverse support needs.

During the visit, students met with HPSN staff and residents and gained insight into the operation of a residential care setting supporting individuals with psychiatric conditions, multiple disabilities, and older adults requiring care and support. As part of the visit, students also presented gift baskets to residents.

The learning experience provided students with an opportunity to connect classroom knowledge with real-world social care practice. Through observing the residential care environment and interacting with staff and residents, students developed a deeper understanding of the needs of vulnerable populations and the role of social workers within multidisciplinary care settings.

The visit was coordinated by Zeenath Shakir and Mariyam Shirda, External Lecturer, with nine Bachelor of Social Work students participating.

The Faculty of Health Sciences extends its appreciation to the staff of HPSN for welcoming the students and to the Ministry of Health for facilitating this valuable learning opportunity.

The initiative contributed to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through learning related to health and social care, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through experiential learning, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between educational and health-sector stakeholders.
