Seminar on Practical Implementation of Human Rights and Rights Based Approaches to Development

23 May 2024

The Faculty of Arts, Maldives National University, conducted a seminar titled “Practical Implementation of Human Rights and Rights-Based Approaches to Development” for students of the Master of Social Policy (MASP) 2024 programme. The seminar provided students with practical frameworks for applying human rights principles within social policy and development practice.

The session focused on key principles including equality, participation, accountability and non-discrimination, helping students connect theoretical knowledge in social policy with practical approaches to promoting human dignity, justice and inclusive development.

By examining how rights-based approaches can address barriers faced by marginalised and vulnerable groups, the seminar strengthened students’ understanding of inclusive policy development and the importance of ensuring that development initiatives reach diverse communities. The emphasis on participation and accountability also highlighted the role of transparent and responsive institutions in building peaceful, just and inclusive societies.

The seminar contributed to developing future social policy professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to design and implement more equitable and inclusive interventions. Through its focus on human rights, participation and non-discrimination, the initiative supported efforts to advance gender equality, reduce inequalities and strengthen inclusive institutions.

The seminar aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, 5: Gender Equality, and 10: Reduced Inequalities.
