The Maldives National University (MNU) hosted Secure Tomorrow: Understanding Personal Finances & Planning Ahead, an interactive financial literacy programme designed to help students build a strong foundation in personal financial management.
Held on 29th October 2026, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at MNU, the 3-hour session brought together 30 students – 22 female and 8 male – for practical, discussion-based learning on informed financial decision-making and long-term financial well-being.
The session covered essential topics students can apply in everyday life:
Goal Setting & Budgeting: SMART goals, understanding needs vs. wants, and budgeting tools and applications
Credit & Debt: Introduction to credit and debt, and what is interest
Investment: Investment basics, savings vs. investing, compounding interest, and investment opportunities in the Maldives
Preparing for Retirement: The Retirement Toolkit, and the Maldives Retirement Pension Scheme (MRPS) as a retirement savings tool
The programme opened with an introduction to financial literacy and a preliminary questionnaire, and closed with a post-session questionnaire and feedback, with a refreshment break in between.
Through discussions and activities, participants gained practical knowledge and tools to manage money with confidence — from setting goals and managing debt, to starting to save, invest, and plan ahead for retirement.
With women making up almost three-quarters of participants, the session also supported women’s economic empowerment and financial independence.
MNU thanks all participating students for their active engagement in securing their financial futures.
