MNU Advances Blended Learning Quality Through Purposeful Course Design Training

22 October 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) has strengthened its efforts to enhance teaching quality and flexible learning opportunities through a professional development workshop titled “Purposeful Learning Design for Blended Delivery,” aimed at equipping academic staff with strategies to integrate face-to-face and online learning into coherent, student-centred educational experiences.

The workshop highlighted the increasing importance of thoughtfully designed blended learning in higher education, where combining digital and classroom-based instruction requires more than simply introducing online activities. The programme emphasised the need to ensure that every learning activity contributes meaningfully to intended educational outcomes, supporting effective teaching and student engagement.

A central focus of the training was constructive alignment, an educational approach that connects intended learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and assessment methods. Academic staff were introduced to how these elements can work together to create structured learning experiences that support students in developing and demonstrating the knowledge and skills expected of them.

The session also explored the defining features of blended subjects at MNU, highlighting the importance of integrating classroom interaction with purposeful online learning opportunities. Participants were introduced to a blended learning design tool intended to support systematic subject planning and help lecturers make informed decisions about instructional delivery.

Particular emphasis was placed on selecting teaching activities based on their educational value rather than the technology used to deliver them. By encouraging lecturers to consider how different learning experiences contribute to course objectives, the workshop promoted more intentional instructional planning and effective use of digital learning environments.

The programme further highlighted the potential of blended delivery to support diverse learning needs by providing students with varied opportunities to participate, interact with course materials, and engage in learning activities. Such approaches can contribute to more inclusive and flexible educational experiences while maintaining consistency in academic expectations.

Beyond individual course design, the initiative underscored the importance of continuous professional development in strengthening institutional teaching standards. By developing academic staff’s understanding of purposeful blended learning, MNU aims to improve the coherence of academic programmes and support ongoing innovation in teaching and learning.

Aligned with priorities of quality education, inclusive and equitable learning, digital literacy, flexible learning opportunities, educational innovation, lifelong learning, and professional capacity development, the workshop reflects MNU’s commitment to creating engaging, accessible, and future-ready higher education experiences that support meaningful student learning outcomes.
