The 2025 Public Health Conference, held from 8 to 10 December 2025, brought approximately 400 participants together to discuss migrant health in the Maldives. Under the theme “Equitable Access, Reduced Vulnerabilities,” the event included government agencies, international organisations, employers, civil society, academics and migrant representatives. Personnel from the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), The Maldives National University (MNU), were among those involved.
Sessions examined barriers including language, cost, legal status, stigma and living and working conditions. Participants shared evidence and considered practical changes to service accessibility, affordability and culturally responsive care in line with the National Migrant Health Policy. The conference generated recommendations and a shared direction for further cross-sector action;
Ongoing cooperation among health services, employers, community representatives and educators can help turn these discussions into more responsive approaches to migrant health.
The conference directly relates to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through better access to care, SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through its focus on migrant populations, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through dialogue across public, private and community sectors.
