Biography

Uza. Fathimath Waheeda is a licensed legal practitioner and Senior Lecturer in Law at the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law, Maldives National University (MNU). She previously served as the Head of the Department of Law from 2020 to 2024, where she played a significant role in strengthening legal education, academic governance, and curriculum development within the Faculty.

With over 15 years of teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, Uza. Fathimath specialises in commercial law and technology-related legal issues. She has taught a wide range of core law courses, including Contract Law, Company Law, Land Law, and Intellectual Property Law. At the postgraduate level, she has delivered specialised courses such as Banking Law, Cyber Law, Media Law, and Alternative Dispute Resolution, contributing to the development of advanced legal knowledge and professional skills among graduate students.

Uza. Fathimath has made substantial contributions to academic program development and quality assurance at MNU. She has been actively involved in curriculum design and program review, including the establishment and review of both LLB and LLM programs to ensure alignment with evolving legal, professional, and regulatory standards.

Her research focuses on cyber law, intellectual property law, and the regulation of emerging technologies. She has published and presented scholarly work examining legal challenges relating to cybercrime, artificial intelligence, copyright protection in the digital environment, online regulation, and cyber governance. Her research contributes to contemporary discussions on balancing technological innovation with legal and ethical frameworks, particularly within developing and small-state contexts.

Uza. Fathimath is also actively involved in professional and academic governance. She has served on several national and institutional committees, including the Maldives Bar Council Expert Committee and the Academic Senate of Maldives National University. Through her work, she continues to bridge legal scholarship, policy development, and legal practice, advancing legal education and the development of law in the Maldives.
