Biography

Salma Hassan is a senior lecturer with 26 years of working experience at the School of Nursing, Maldives National University, where she plays an essential role in teaching, learning, and assessment of the development of undergraduate and postgraduate students across various nursing and midwifery courses. She joined the nursing workforce in 1991 as a student nurse trainee at the Central Hospital. Her special interest in midwifery education shows her commitment to advancing maternal health practices. She has been coordinating the midwifery course for over two decades since 2005. In addition to her classroom responsibilities, she is an active registered clinical examiner at the Maldives Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Her professional affiliations include membership in the Maldivian Nurses Association (MNA), Community Nurse Volunteers (CNV), and the Maldives Oncology Nurses Association (MONA), for which she also serves on the advisory board. Additionally, she is an active member of the Social Sector Council. Furthermore, Salma Hassan is a trained First Aid Trainer of Trainers (ToT) and conducts first aid courses through the School of Nursing and CNV. She has served as a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council from 2020-2025. Several workshops and training sessions on antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) were conducted nationwide for nurses, and they were affiliated with the Health Protection Agency and the Ministry of Health. Moreover, she is keenly interested in researching postnatal care and cancer research. Most importantly, she is one of the country’s first batch to receive a nursing midwifery diploma. She graduated and won the Presidential award for first place in the course.
