19 November 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) and Curtin University have formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, marking a significant milestone in strengthening academic, research, and institutional collaboration between the two universities. The MoU was officially signed by Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Vice Chancellor of MNU, and Professor Xiaotian Zhang, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global.

The ceremony was graced by His Excellency David Jessup, whose presence underscored the close and growing ties between the Maldives and Australia. In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of MNU expressed sincere appreciation to His Excellency for his continued support, noting that the partnership reflects a shared vision of expanding educational and research opportunities across borders.

Curtin University is an internationally recognized public research institution with exceptional strengths in minerals and mining engineering, Earth sciences, engineering, health disciplines, and many more. Curtin University has maintained active engagement with the Maldives over recent years. Supported by the Australian High Commission and local partners, Curtin students have undertaken internships, fieldwork, and collaborative activities with MNU. In 2024 and 2025, Curtin students worked alongside MNU’s Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology in design workshops for outdoor structures, one of which has been successfully built in Kulhudhuffushi. MNU students have also participated in Curtin’s preliminary surveys in Tholhendhoo, further deepening academic linkages and practical learning.

Looking ahead, MNU’s Architecture Department has applied for a joint fieldwork project under the New Colombo Plan, focusing on heritage research in Tholhendhoo and extending to Sri Lanka in early 2027. The newly signed MoU also paves the way for enhanced staff development opportunities, including academic exchanges and PhD pathways in engineering science, architecture, and related disciplines.

The partnership aims to strengthen student progression pathways, promote interdisciplinary learning, and facilitate joint research projects, field studies, and internships beneficial to both institutions. With MNU’s nationwide campus network and Curtin’s presence in Perth, Sarawak, and Colombo, the collaboration is expected to broaden cultural exchange, regional engagement, and community-focused initiatives.
