The Maldives National University (MNU) welcomed 13 students from the University of Melbourne for a professional placement programme running from 24 August to 11 September 2026, under the academic partnership between the two institutions.

The placement provides the University of Melbourne students with an opportunity to gain practical experience within the Maldivian education context, complement their theoretical knowledge through hands-on engagement, and develop their professional skills through interaction with MNU students, educators, and local communities.

As part of the programme, the students will engage with the Maldivian education system and community context, enabling them to gain insights into the opportunities and challenges associated with education in a unique island nation. The programme also facilitates peer learning, cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, and professional networking, contributing to a broader understanding of education from local and international perspectives.

The initiative further supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through international academic engagement and experiential learning. It contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education by promoting experiential learning, knowledge exchange, and professional development; SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by fostering cross-cultural understanding and inclusive learning experiences; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities by strengthening understanding of education, communities, and sustainable development within the unique island context of the Maldives; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening international academic collaboration and institutional partnerships.

Through meaningful engagement between students, educators, and communities, the professional placement promotes global citizenship, intercultural understanding, knowledge sharing, and a deeper appreciation of sustainable communities. The initiative also strengthens the ongoing academic relationship between MNU and the University of Melbourne, creating opportunities for continued collaboration and long-term partnerships in education.
