The Maldives National University (MNU) has joined the Sulitest Change Leader Community, marking another step in the University’s commitment to strengthening sustainability knowledge and education within its academic community and contributing to sustainable development in the Maldives.

The Change Leader Community is an international initiative of Sulitest, a non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing sustainability and global responsibility through education. Sulitest works with higher education institutions around the world to strengthen sustainability literacy, assess learning outcomes, and support the integration of sustainability into teaching and learning.

As part of its participation, MNU will engage with TASK™ (The Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge), Sulitest’s assessment framework for understanding sustainability knowledge among students and staff. The assessment provides institutions with evidence of existing knowledge and areas for development, supporting informed approaches to strengthening sustainability education.

Established in 2011, MNU builds on a higher education legacy dating back to 1973. As the Maldives’ national university, MNU contributes to the cultural, social, and economic development of the nation through education, research, innovation, and knowledge creation. With campuses across the Maldives and more than 260 academic programmes, the University serves learners across diverse disciplines, including health sciences, engineering, technology, business, education, hospitality, and marine studies.

MNU’s participation in the Change Leader Community will support the University’s efforts to further embed sustainability perspectives across teaching and learning, research, innovation, and university life. It will also provide opportunities to learn from international institutions and share experiences and practices within a global network committed to advancing sustainability through education.

For MNU, developing sustainability knowledge is particularly relevant to the Maldives, where environmental, social, and economic sustainability are closely interconnected with national development. Strengthening the sustainability literacy of students and staff can help equip future professionals, leaders, and citizens with the knowledge needed to understand complex challenges and make informed decisions.

Through its engagement with Sulitest and the Change Leader Community, MNU aims to build a stronger evidence base for sustainability education while contributing to a culture of learning, responsibility, and positive change within the University and beyond.
