The Maldives National University conducted a session titled “Rethinking Academia in the AI Era” on 23 September 2026. The session provided an opportunity for participants to explore the evolving role and impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education, with a focus on teaching, learning and research.

The session was facilitated by Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, Chairperson of the Department of Information Studies, East West University, Bangladesh, and President of MILNetBD. A total of 20 participants took part in the session, engaging in discussions on the opportunities and challenges presented by the increasing use of AI in academic environments.

The session highlighted the importance of adopting a human-centred approach to AI, emphasizing critical thinking, creativity, academic integrity and scholarly judgement. Participants also explored the responsible and ethical use of emerging technologies and reflected on the changing roles of educators and learners in an increasingly AI-driven academic landscape.

The discussion provided a platform for participants to consider how AI can be integrated into higher education in ways that complement human expertise while maintaining the values and principles that underpin academic practice. It further encouraged reflection on opportunities for innovation and the development of new approaches to teaching, learning and research.

The initiative contributed to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, particularly through promoting awareness of emerging technologies and encouraging the development of relevant digital skills and responsible approaches to AI in education. It also supported SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by fostering engagement with emerging technologies and encouraging innovation in academic teaching, learning and research.

The session further contributed to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by facilitating international academic knowledge exchange and collaboration. The participation of an academic expert from East West University and MILNetBD created an opportunity to share perspectives and experiences on the implications of AI for higher education, strengthening connections for continued knowledge-sharing and collaborative engagement.

Through initiatives such as this, The Maldives National University continues to promote academic dialogue, innovation and knowledge exchange, supporting its commitment to preparing learners and educators to navigate the evolving landscape of higher education.
