MNU and Maldives Physiotherapy Association Sign MoU to Advance Health, Quality Education and Sustainable Partnerships

08th September 2026

The Maldives National University (MNU) and the Maldives Physiotherapy Association (MPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen physiotherapy education, professional development, research, and healthcare services in the Maldives. The MoU was signed today, 8 September 2026, coinciding with World Physiotherapy Day, marking a significant milestone in advancing the physiotherapy profession and improving access to quality rehabilitation services across the country.

The partnership comes at an important time as the Maldives continues to experience growing healthcare needs associated with chronic conditions, rehabilitation requirements, and an aging population. Physiotherapy plays a vital role not only in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, but also in prevention, early intervention, mobility, functional independence, and the promotion of long-term health and well-being.

Through this partnership, MNU and MPA will work collaboratively to strengthen opportunities for international-standard physiotherapy education and professional training within the Maldives, while supporting the development of a skilled and competent local workforce. The collaboration will also create opportunities for knowledge exchange, research, professional capacity building, and initiatives that contribute to the advancement of physiotherapy practice in the country.

By strengthening the availability of qualified physiotherapy professionals and supporting the expansion of services beyond the capital, the partnership will contribute to improving access to rehabilitation and allied health services for communities across the Maldives. This will help reduce geographical barriers to care while supporting a more resilient and sustainable national healthcare system.

The collaboration also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, through improved access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation services; SDG 4: Quality Education, through strengthened education, training, and professional development opportunities; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through collaboration between MNU and MPA to address national healthcare and workforce development priorities.

The signing of the MoU represents an important step towards strengthening the future of physiotherapy in the Maldives and creating greater opportunities for education, professional development, research, and service delivery within the country.

MNU and MPA expressed their sincere appreciation to all individuals and stakeholders from both organisations whose contributions made this collaboration possible. The two institutions look forward to working together to advance the physiotherapy profession, strengthen healthcare services, and contribute to a healthier and more skilled Maldives.
