MNU Strengthens Fairness and Academic Standards Through Marking and Moderation Training

27 May 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) has reinforced its commitment to fair and transparent academic assessment through a professional development workshop on “Marking and Moderation,” aimed at strengthening consistency, reliability, and accountability in evaluating student performance.

The workshop addressed a critical challenge in higher education: ensuring that students receive fair and consistent assessment outcomes regardless of who evaluates their work. By emphasising the application of clearly defined assessment criteria and effective moderation practices, the programme sought to strengthen academic standards and promote greater confidence in assessment decisions.

A central focus of the training was identifying and addressing differences in academic judgement among markers. The workshop explored how moderation processes can help lecturers review assessment decisions, minimise inconsistencies, and ensure that student work is evaluated against established academic standards.

The programme also highlighted the importance of maintaining consistency across different student cohorts and assessment periods. By encouraging a shared understanding of marking criteria, the training aimed to reduce variations in evaluation and support valid, reliable, and equitable assessment outcomes.

Beyond improving individual marking practices, the workshop underscored the role of assessment moderation in strengthening institutional quality assurance and academic accountability. Consistent evaluation practices are essential to safeguarding academic integrity, ensuring transparency, and providing students with equal opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

The initiative reflects MNU’s continued investment in academic staff development and its broader efforts to promote a culture of fairness, professionalism, and continuous improvement in higher education.

Aligned with priorities of quality education, inclusive and equitable learning, reduced educational inequalities, academic integrity, professional capacity development, and lifelong learning, the training supports MNU’s commitment to strengthening assessment quality and fostering a more transparent, accountable, and student-centred academic environment.
