The Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies (FHTS), The Maldives National University (MNU) organised an exposure trip to Bangkok, Thailand, in 2024, providing students with opportunities for experiential learning and exposure to hospitality and tourism practices beyond the classroom.

The study trip complemented students’ academic programmes by providing direct exposure to tourism environments, hospitality operations and destination-related practices in an international setting. The experience enabled students to connect classroom learning with practical applications and gain a broader understanding of the global hospitality and tourism industry.

During the exposure trip, students observed industry practices, service standards, tourism attractions and hospitality operations within a different destination context. This provided opportunities for knowledge sharing and skills development, while exposing students to innovation and contemporary approaches within the tourism and hospitality industry.

The international exposure also enabled students to compare theoretical concepts gained through their academic programmes with their practical application in another tourism environment. By observing different approaches to hospitality operations and tourism services, students developed broader industry awareness and gained insights relevant to their future employability and the world of work.

The experience further contributed to students’ understanding of global hospitality trends and tourism practices while providing learning opportunities that cannot be fully replicated within a classroom. Exposure to a different destination context encouraged students to broaden their perspectives, strengthen their understanding of industry practices and reflect on the knowledge and skills required for professional careers in hospitality and tourism.

The trip also supported students’ confidence, motivation and awareness of career opportunities within the sector. Through direct engagement with an international tourism environment, students gained practical insights that can contribute to their lifelong learning, skills development and professional development.
