The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) organised a three-hour Clinical Supervision Workshop for practising psychologists on 8 February 2024, focusing on strengthening effective, ethical and reflective supervisory practices.
The workshop was facilitated by Ms. Mariyam Nawaza, a licensed counsellor, and coordinated by Mariyam Ifshan Ahmed. The session provided practising psychologists with an opportunity to develop practical skills relevant to clinical supervision and professional development.
Key areas addressed during the workshop included establishing and maintaining ethical and professional boundaries, navigating challenges in supervisory relationships, providing effective feedback, fostering reflective practice, and balancing supervisory responsibilities with self-care and ongoing professional development.
Clinical supervision plays an important role in supporting professional competence, ethical practice and continuous learning within the mental health sector. Strengthening supervisors’ skills can contribute to more effective support for practitioners and promote reflective approaches to clinical work.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of maintaining appropriate boundaries within supervisory relationships and developing constructive approaches to feedback. Attention to self-care and professional development further recognised the need for supervisors to maintain their own wellbeing and professional growth while supporting others.
By providing targeted professional development opportunities for practising psychologists, FHS contributes to strengthening the capacity of the mental health workforce and supporting quality professional practice in the Maldives.
The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through strengthening the mental health workforce, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through continuing professional development, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through professional knowledge exchange and collaboration.
