09 August 2026

The Maldives National University (MNU) has strengthened its commitment to academic excellence and student-centered education through a professional development programme titled “Effective Teaching and Learning in Higher Education,” designed to equip academic staff with practical teaching strategies, deepen their understanding of adult learning, and enhance the quality of higher education delivery.

The programme focused on strengthening lecturers’ pedagogical competencies by introducing adult learning theories, contemporary teaching methods, and instructional strategies relevant to university education. Recognizing that students bring diverse experiences, abilities, and learning preferences to the classroom, the training emphasized the importance of adopting flexible and inclusive approaches to teaching.

A central component of the programme was exploring how clearly defined learning outcomes can guide effective lesson delivery and instructional planning. Academic staff were encouraged to consider how teaching methods, classroom activities, and learning expectations can be aligned to create more purposeful and engaging educational experiences.

The training also provided opportunities for lecturers to reflect critically on their existing teaching practices and identify areas for professional growth. By encouraging reflective teaching, the programme sought to support continuous improvement and help educators respond more effectively to the evolving needs of university students.

Importantly, the initiative responded to professional development needs identified through student feedback, reinforcing the role of student perspectives in improving teaching quality. This feedback-informed approach highlighted MNU’s commitment to strengthening educational experiences through responsiveness, academic accountability, and ongoing institutional improvement.

The programme further addressed the importance of adapting teaching practices to a rapidly changing technological environment. As digital tools and emerging technologies continue to influence higher education, lecturers were encouraged to consider instructional approaches that support meaningful student engagement while maintaining accessibility and educational effectiveness.

Beyond developing individual teaching competencies, the training highlighted the wider role of effective pedagogy in supporting student participation, academic progression, and equitable learning opportunities. By promoting inclusive instructional practices, MNU aims to create learning environments that recognize learner diversity and encourage active participation across its academic programmes.

Aligned with priorities of quality education, inclusive and equitable learning, lifelong learning, professional capacity development, digital readiness, student engagement, and continuous educational improvement, the programme reflects MNU’s ongoing efforts to strengthen teaching quality and equip academic staff with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver responsive, engaging, and effective higher education.
