The Dean and lecturers of the Faculty of Education participated in a professional development workshop titled “Math Through Stories,” conducted by the Research Development Office of Maldives National University (MNU) on 17 June 2025. The workshop focused on enhancing approaches to teaching mathematics at the primary level through innovative and engaging pedagogical strategies.
The workshop explored the integration of storytelling into mathematics education as a way of supporting children’s understanding of mathematical concepts. By connecting mathematical ideas with meaningful narratives and familiar contexts, the approach encourages students to engage more actively with learning and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.
The session also highlighted the potential of storytelling to create engaging, meaningful, and learner-centred learning experiences, while encouraging positive attitudes towards mathematics and supporting lifelong learning. The professional development opportunity provided academic staff with insights into creative approaches that can be incorporated into mathematics teaching and teacher education.
The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education by promoting innovative, inclusive, and learner-centred teaching approaches that enhance the quality of mathematics education and support meaningful learning experiences.
It also supports SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by encouraging pedagogical innovation and the development of creative approaches to teaching and learning. Integrating storytelling into mathematics education demonstrates how innovative teaching strategies can enhance traditional educational practices.
Furthermore, the workshop contributes to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening professional engagement and knowledge sharing within the university community. Collaboration between the Faculty of Education and the Research Development Office creates opportunities to share expertise and promote innovative educational practices.
Through their participation, the Dean and lecturers strengthened their understanding of innovative mathematics pedagogy and storytelling-based learning, supporting the Faculty’s commitment to continuous professional development, quality education, and lifelong learning.
