The Faculty of Arts, Maldives National University, organised a Commemorative Seminar marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India, providing a platform for academic dialogue, cultural exchange and reflection on the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

The seminar was organised collaboratively by the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations (BAPIR) programme, discipline lecturers, the High Commission of India, the Indian Cultural Centre, and the MNU Student Union. The event brought together academics, students, diplomats and members of the community to explore the historical relationship between the Maldives and India and consider opportunities for continued cooperation.

Through presentations, student reflections and cultural performances, the seminar encouraged participants to engage with the shared histories, cultural connections and evolving relationship between the two countries. The exchange also provided students with an opportunity to connect their academic learning with real-world diplomatic and regional relations.

The event promoted intercultural understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity, while creating opportunities for dialogue among students, academics, diplomatic representatives and community members. The collaboration between the Faculty of Arts, Indian diplomatic and cultural institutions, and the MNU Student Union further demonstrated the value of institutional partnerships in creating meaningful educational and cultural experiences.

By bringing together academic learning, cultural exchange and international engagement, the seminar contributed to quality education and supported students’ understanding of diplomacy, regional relations and cross-cultural cooperation. It also strengthened partnerships that can facilitate continued knowledge exchange and collaboration between institutions in the Maldives and India.

The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education, 10: Reduced Inequalities, 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
