Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) Students Visit Maldives Meteorological Service to Enhance Climate Education

15 September 2024

On 15 September 2024, Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) students studying Social Science, accompanied by Senior Lecturer Mohamed Shareef, visited the Maldives Meteorological Service as part of the Faculty of Education’s outreach activities and local climate education initiatives.

The visit provided students with an opportunity to gain practical insights into how weather data are collected, monitored, analysed, and used to understand weather patterns and climate-related changes. By connecting theoretical knowledge with real-world scientific practices, the activity enriched students’ learning experiences and strengthened their scientific literacy, critical thinking, and environmental awareness.

The visit contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education by promoting experiential and inquiry-based learning, SDG 13: Climate Action by enhancing students’ understanding of weather, climate monitoring, and environmental sustainability, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening collaboration between the Faculty of Education and the Maldives Meteorological Service.

The experience also highlighted the importance of integrating climate education into primary Social Science teaching, equipping future teachers with practical knowledge and teaching strategies to engage young learners in understanding climate change, environmental challenges, and sustainable practices. Through this initiative, the Faculty of Education continues to promote learning beyond the classroom, encourage collaboration with relevant institutions, and prepare future educators to foster climate awareness and environmental responsibility among the next generation.
