Assistant Professor Dr. Mohamed Umar conducted a Parental Awareness Session titled “Inculcating Reading Habits in Children” for the parents of Naivaadhoo School on 14 September 2025. The session aimed to raise awareness among parents about the importance of developing positive reading habits from an early age and to provide practical strategies for creating a supportive home literacy environment.
During the session, parents were encouraged to engage children in shared reading, provide access to age-appropriate reading materials, and establish regular reading routines at home. The discussion highlighted how consistent family engagement with reading can contribute to children’s language development, literacy skills, critical thinking, and lifelong learning.
The session also emphasised the important role of parents in supporting children’s academic achievement and overall cognitive development. By encouraging a positive reading culture at home, families can complement school-based learning and help children develop greater confidence and interest in learning.
The initiative contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): Quality Education by promoting literacy, lifelong learning, and meaningful parental involvement in children’s education. Strengthening literacy practices within the home can support children’s learning and educational development from an early age.
The session also supports SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by encouraging equitable opportunities for literacy development through active family engagement. Promoting access to reading resources and supportive learning environments at home can help reduce barriers to children’s educational development.
Furthermore, the initiative aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening collaboration between schools, families, and the wider education community. Engaging parents as active partners in children’s education contributes to shared responsibility for improving educational experiences and outcomes.
Through this parental awareness initiative, Dr. Mohamed Umar contributed to promoting early literacy, family engagement, lifelong learning, and equitable educational opportunities, reinforcing the importance of strong school–family partnerships in achieving quality education and the Sustainable Development Goals.
