MNU Expands Efforts to Strengthen Fair Assessment and Student Learning Through Second Batch of Academic Staff Training

11 August 2024

The Maldives National University (MNU) has continued its efforts to enhance teaching quality and equitable learning opportunities through the second batch of its “Assessment and Evaluation for Academic Staff” training, focusing on fair evaluation, effective feedback, and improved student learning outcomes.

The training addressed a key priority in higher education: ensuring that assessment practices not only measure academic achievement accurately but also help identify learning gaps and guide students towards continuous improvement. By emphasising consistent evaluation standards and constructive feedback, the programme sought to strengthen the quality and reliability of student assessment across academic disciplines.

A central focus of the session was promoting fairness and inclusivity in assessment. Academic staff explored the importance of recognising diverse learning needs and applying evaluation approaches that provide students with equitable opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and academic progress.

The programme also highlighted the role of timely, clear, and meaningful feedback in supporting student development. By identifying areas where students require additional guidance, lecturers can adapt their teaching approaches, address learning challenges, and create more responsive and supportive educational experiences.

Beyond assessment techniques, the training encouraged academic staff to critically reflect on their evaluation practices, reinforcing the importance of professional accountability, consistency, and continuous improvement in teaching and learning.

The delivery of a second batch reflects continued opportunities for academic staff to strengthen their assessment competencies and contribute to a culture of educational excellence at MNU. The initiative underscores the importance of ensuring that assessment serves not only as a measure of student performance but also as a tool for promoting academic growth and lifelong learning.

Aligned with broader priorities of quality education, inclusive learning, equitable opportunities, professional capacity development, reduced educational inequalities, and lifelong learning, the training supports MNU’s efforts to strengthen academic standards and foster a fairer, more student-centred higher education environment.
