Fazna Ahmed

First Lady of the Maldives and Proud Alumna of The Maldives National University

Fazna Ahmed, the First Lady of the Maldives, is a proud alumna of The Maldives National University (formerly ITEE), which she fondly recalls as the foundation of her teaching career. “The teachers who taught me created an environment that was both supportive and inspiring , those experiences shaped the essence of who I became as a teacher,” she reflects.

With over 30 years of dedicated service in education, Fazna Ahmed has made a lasting contribution to the lives of countless students. She began her journey as a primary teacher and went on to serve as the Principal of Aminiya School, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to nurturing young minds and promoting quality education.

Her academic background includes higher education in Physical Education and Teaching Children with Special Needs, as well as certification as a Personal Trainer, qualifications that reflect her passion for holistic well-being and inclusive education.

Today, as the First Lady, Fazna continues to use her platform to advocate for causes close to her heart, creating happier lives for children with special needs, protecting children’s rights, promoting safe environments, and raising awareness on mental health and healthy living.

Her journey from an MNU student to a national role model stands as an inspiring example of the impact of education and lifelong dedication to service.

Dr. Aishth Ali

Minister of Education and Distinguished Alumna of The Maldives National University

Dr. Aishath Ali, the Minister of Education, stands as one of the most distinguished alumni of The Maldives National University (MNU). A gold medalist in the field of Arts and Skills, she was among the first students to be awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from MNU.  a milestone that continues to inspire future generations of Maldivian scholars.

Her journey in education began after completing her National Diploma in Secondary Teaching from the Teacher Training Centre. In 2000, she started her career as a teacher at Aminiya School, one of the oldest and most respected schools in the Maldives. Following her first degree, Dr. Aishath Ali joined the then Maldives College of Higher Education (now MNU) as a lecturer, where she made significant contributions to the academic community.

She later became the Registrar of The Maldives National University, becoming the first woman to hold this important and demanding position. Her leadership extended to the University’s Research Centre, where her efforts strengthened research culture and academic excellence.

Before her appointment as Minister of Education, Dr. Aishath Ali remained deeply committed to driving positive change within the University and the broader education sector of the Maldives. Her outstanding achievements, dedication, and leadership continue to bring honor to The Maldives National University, a true testament to the power of education in shaping national progress.

Hussain Rasheed Moosa

A Lifelong Advocate for Health and Humanity

Hussain Rasheed Moosa began his journey in the health sector at the Allied Health Services Training Centre (AHSTC) in 1981, the foundation of a distinguished career dedicated to public health and community service. The comprehensive training he received equipped him with the skills to serve in multiple capacities, as a medical professional, nurse, midwife, health educator, and manager,  reflecting the depth and versatility of his expertise.

He later pursued higher education in Public Health from institutions in Australia and Thailand, further strengthening his commitment to advancing healthcare in the Maldives. Today, Hussain serves as the Deputy Director General at the Ministry of Education, where his leadership continues to influence national health and education initiatives.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Hussain is deeply devoted to humanitarian work. He began offering voluntary home-based medical support for patients unable to visit hospitals or clinics and worked at Firdaus Clinic, where he was known for his compassion and service. As a co-founder of the Cancer Society of Maldives (CSM) in 2012, he played a key role in promoting cancer awareness, prevention, and early detection across the country.

A master facilitator of awareness and screening programs, Hussain Rasheed Moosa exemplifies the values of service, compassion, and leadership. The Maldives National University takes great pride in his lifelong contributions to public health and the well-being of the Maldivian community.

Al-Ustaza. Mariyam Shunana

A Trailblazer in Law and Justice

Al-Ustaza Maryam Shunana stands as one of the most accomplished legal professionals in the Maldives, known for her leadership, integrity, and commitment to justice. A proud graduate of the Maldives National University, Shunana earned her Bachelor of Sharia and Law (Honours) First Class, before pursuing her Master’s in Corporate Law at New York University, a testament to her dedication to academic and professional excellence.

As the Managing Partner of Shunana & Co. LLP, she is a highly respected corporate lawyer who has represented the State in several major commercial and public interest cases. Her work has shaped key developments in the Maldivian legal landscape, including preparing and filing the largest class action lawsuit in the history of the Maldives.

In 2019, Shunana founded the Public Interest Law Center (PILC), an initiative dedicated to providing free legal assistance to those in need, raising public awareness of legal rights, and advocating for legislative reform to strengthen justice and fairness across the country.

Her outstanding contributions have earned her national recognition, including the Leadership Excellence in Law, Gold Category Award at the Maldives Professional and Career Women Awards 2019 and the Rehendhu Award in the Social Sector.

Mohamed Zubair

Inspiring Leadership in Education and Sustainable Development

Mohamed Zubair, a proud graduate of the Maldives National University (MNU), has dedicated his career to shaping young minds and advancing sustainable community development. After earning his Bachelor of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from MNU, he went on to complete a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Open University of Malaysia, combining his passion for education with strong leadership and management skills.

Zubair began his professional journey as an English teacher and now serves as the Principal of B. Kihadhoo School, where his leadership has brought innovation and growth to both students and staff. Under his guidance, the school has introduced a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing student learning, creativity, and social responsibility.

Beyond education, Zubair is one of the founding members of the Farm Foundation, a voluntary organization that promotes organic farming and environmental sustainability. Through the foundation, he works to introduce modern farming methods, provide essential farming equipment, and reduce the use of harmful chemicals in agriculture.

Driven by a deep commitment to sustainability, Zubair also instills in his students the values of environmental stewardship and community problem-solving, encouraging them to think critically about local challenges and contribute to real-world solutions.

His work reflects the Maldives National University’s vision of producing leaders who not only excel in their professions but also serve the nation with integrity and purpose.

Hawwa Zahira

Champion for Inclusion, Child Protection, and Community Well-being

Hawa Zahira, a distinguished alumna of the Institute for Teacher Education (ITE), now part of the Maldives National University (MNU), credits her teacher training as the foundation that shaped her values and purpose. “ITE was the place that helped me build my personality and gave me the experiences that inspired me to take initiative, help others, and become a productive person,” she reflects.

Hawa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Macquarie University (Australia) and a Master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Waikato (New Zealand). Her academic background, coupled with her compassionate outlook, has guided her lifelong commitment to improving lives through education, inclusion, and advocacy.

Her journey in charity and social work began early, inspired by her mother, fondly known as Saiboani Dhahtha . Over the years, Hawa has contributed immensely to community wellbeing through various initiatives, including providing psychological first aid during the COVID-19 pandemic, conducting professional development programs for teachers, and leading child protection sessions across the Maldives on behalf of ARC NGO.

Having worked with UNICEF’s Child Protection Program from 2006 to 2011, Hawa continues to serve as a UNICEF consultant on campaigns to prevent sexual violence against children and women. She also serves as a Presidential appointee on the National Disability Council, where she advocates for the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Mariyam Laiza

Dedicated Educator, Scout Leader, and Advocate for Social Justice

Mariyam Laiza, a proud graduate of the Institute for Teacher Education (now part of the Maldives National University), began her remarkable journey in 1994 with a deep passion for education and community service. She served in the education sector for over a decade, shaping young minds and contributing to the development of the nation’s schools.

Laiza holds a Master’s in Education (2017) and a Master’s in Human Rights and Democratization, academic achievements that reflect her commitment to lifelong learning and social progress. Her involvement in scouting during her teacher training years became a defining part of her life’s mission,  to empower youth through leadership, discipline, and service.

Since 1995, Laiza has been a driving force in the Scouting Movement of the Maldives, continuously engaged in forming new scout groups and training scout leaders. Between 2009 and 2011, she served as a member of the Scouts’ Council, as Commissioner for Public Relations, and on the Youth Program Committee, inspiring generations of young Maldivians to serve their communities.

Beyond scouting, Laiza’s dedication to volunteerism extends to her work with the Maldives Red Crescent, Watercare Maldives, and Clean Maldives. She has also contributed significantly to psychosocial well-being, serving as a board member of the Psychosocial Support Center (2015–present) and conducting psychological first aid training, including programs for frontliners during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, Mariyam Laiza serves as the Presidential Ombudsperson under the Transitional Justice Act, continuing her lifelong commitment to justice, human rights, and national service.

Mariyam Shareef

Dedicated Educator and Compassionate Humanitarian

Mariyam Shareef, affectionately known as Mary, is a proud alumna of the Maldives National University (MNU) whose journey reflects a deep commitment to education and community service. She was among the first batch of students to complete the Diploma in Early Childhood Education in 2011 from the Faculty of Education (FE). Continuing her academic journey, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Education in Primary Special Education Needs (SEN),  a program designed to promote inclusive learning and bring more smiles to young learners, especially children with special needs.

Mary credits MNU for nurturing her leadership potential and shaping her into the educator she is today. Since beginning her teaching career in 2007, she has become known for her empathy, patience, and ability to connect deeply with her students. She currently serves as a teacher at Thajuddin School, where her classroom reflects both her dedication and her heart for inclusion.

Beyond teaching, Mary is passionately involved in community and humanitarian work. Her journey in volunteerism began in 2008 with the Maldives Girl Guide Association, and she later expanded her service through the Maldivian Red Crescent. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Mary played a vital role in managing an Incident Command Point, handling emergency calls, coordinating medicine deliveries across the city, and ensuring medical supplies reached those in need, including those arriving from abroad.

In addition, Mary served as part of a Health Protection Agency (HPA) team that inspected shops and restaurants to ensure compliance with safety standards during the pandemic, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to public health and well-being.

Athif Abdul Hakim

Inspiring Educator, Scout Leader, and Humanitarian

Athif Abdul Hakim, a proud alumnus of the Maldives National University (MNU), has dedicated his life to education, youth development, and service to the nation. Inspired by a teacher during his school years, Athif began his journey in education by completing his Teaching Course in 1994 at the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE), the foundation of today’s MNU.

Athif credits the Maldives National University for broadening his perspectives and shaping his professional growth. He went on to complete his degree, postgraduate, and master’s studies at MNU, continuing a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and excellence in teaching.

Beyond the classroom, Athif has made an enduring mark through his philanthropic and community-building work, particularly in Scouting. His leadership and commitment were evident when the Scout troop he trained won the President’s Cup in the 1996 National Scout Competition, a testament to his guidance and mentorship.

Known for his generosity, Athif continues to engage in volunteer work, including regular blood donations and assisting others by helping with documentation and official forms. He has also been actively involved in humanitarian efforts supporting the Palestinian people, reflecting his deep compassion and sense of global solidarity.

Professionally, Athif serves as the Leading Teacher of the Dhivehi Department at Majeedhiyya School, where he continues to inspire students through his mastery of the Dhivehi language. His engaging teaching style is well recognized, and his voice is familiar to many through Dhivehirajje Adu’s educational programs, particularly those focused on Dhivehi language learning and SSC exam preparation.

Athif’s exceptional service to education and his unwavering dedication to nation-building have earned him wide respect. Today, he also serves as a Council Member representing the Alumni of the Maldives National University, continuing his mission to strengthen the connection between MNU and its graduates.

Saima Ibrahim

Empowering Her Island Through Law and Financial Awareness

Saima Ibrahim turned her lifelong dream into reality when she joined the Diploma in Sharia and Law program at The Maldives National University (MNU) Hithadhoo Campus in 2014, choosing to pursue higher education in her own island. Her determination and commitment to learning led her to successfully complete her Bachelor’s in Sharia and Law, followed by a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in 2020.

Today, Saima stands as a shining example of how education can transform lives and empower communities. As a lawyer specializing in the insurance sector, she applies her legal expertise to strengthen professional practice and promote ethical standards within the field. Her work extends beyond the legal framework — she actively participates in initiatives that raise public awareness about insurance, financial literacy, and the importance of saving for the future.

Saima firmly believes that the true progress of the Maldives depends on the balanced development of its islands. She advocates that educated professionals from the islands must contribute directly to their communities, ensuring that rural development progresses alongside that of Malé City.

Driven by this vision, Saima continues to serve as a role model for young islanders, proving that success and impact can be achieved from any corner of the country. Through her dedication, knowledge, and passion, she strives to become one of the leading lawyers in the field of insurance, committed to both her profession and her nation.

Fathimath Rishmi

Advancing Regional Healthcare Through Dedication and Innovation

From a young age, Fathimath Rishmi aspired to build a career in the health sector, driven by a passion for service and community well-being. She began her journey at The Maldives National University (MNU), completing her Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science in 2012. Soon after, she joined Gaafu Alifu (GA) Regional Hospital and later Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), where she gained valuable experience in clinical diagnostics and patient care.

Recognizing the growing importance of laboratory sciences in regional healthcare, Rishmi decided to further her education. In 2018, she completed her Bachelor’s in Medical Laboratory Science from MNU, a milestone that propelled her professional growth and deepened her expertise.

Today, Rishmi serves as the Senior Laboratory Technologist and Head of the Diagnostic Department at GA Regional Hospital, where she leads her team with professionalism, precision, and compassion. She plays a vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery in the atolls, ensuring that advanced diagnostic services are available closer to home.

Rishmi believes that working in the provinces is a powerful way to contribute to nation-building, bridging healthcare gaps between Malé and the regions. She continues to encourage young people to explore the laboratory field, a sector she describes as “a pathway to innovation, discovery, and service.”

Her journey reflects how education at MNU has empowered her to advance in her career, think critically, and lead with confidence. The Maldives National University takes pride in Fathimath Rishmi’s accomplishments and her inspiring dedication to building a healthier, more equitable Maldives.

Mohamed Ajeeb

A Lifelong Educator and Leader in Dhivehi Education

From an early age, Mohamed Ajeeb was inspired by his school headmaster to dedicate his life to teaching and national service. His passion for education led him to begin his teaching career in 1987 as a primary teacher at GDh. Atoll Education Centre. Before that, in 1985, he completed a two-year teacher training program at the Teachers’ Education Centre (TEC), followed by a two-year Qur’an recitation course, foundations that shaped his lifelong journey as an educator and mentor.

Throughout his career, Ajeeb has completed numerous professional development programs in teaching and educational supervision, both in the Maldives and abroad. As a Cub Scout leader, he played a pioneering role in introducing and expanding the Scouting movement in his island, helping students build confidence, discipline, and a spirit of volunteerism through community work and service.

Ajeeb’s academic pursuit continued as he earned his Bachelor of Education and later his Master of Education from The Maldives National University (MNU) — an experience he describes as “a profound treasure that deepened my scientific understanding and educational philosophy.”

Beyond education, Ajeeb is a poet and advocate for the Dhivehi language, continuously creating literary works that celebrate Maldivian identity and culture. His dedication to both education and the arts reflects his belief in holistic learning and the nurturing of values through creativity.

Today, Mohamed Ajeeb serves as the Principal of Thinadhoo School, where he continues to inspire teachers and students alike. His lifelong service stands as a model of leadership, humility, and devotion to nation-building.
