Raziyya Aboobakuru

Inspiring the Next Generation Through Education and Service

Fazna Ahmed, the First Lady of the Maldives, is a proud alumna of The Maldives National University (formerly ITEE), which she fondly recalls as the foundation of her teaching career. “The teachers who taught me created an environment that was both supportive and inspiring , those experiences shaped the essence of who I became as a teacher,” she reflects.

With over 30 years of dedicated service in education, Fazna Ahmed has made a lasting contribution to the lives of countless students. She began her journey as a primary teacher and went on to serve as the Principal of Aminiya School, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to nurturing young minds and promoting quality education.

Her academic background includes higher education in Physical Education and Teaching Children with Special Needs, as well as certification as a Personal Trainer, qualifications that reflect her passion for holistic well-being and inclusive education.

Today, as the First Lady, Fazna continues to use her platform to advocate for causes close to her heart, creating happier lives for children with special needs, protecting children’s rights, promoting safe environments, and raising awareness on mental health and healthy living.

Her journey from an MNU student to a national role model stands as an inspiring example of the impact of education and lifelong dedication to service.

Zamila Ahmed

From Classroom to Conservation: A Journey of Purpose and Growth

Zamila Ahmed believes that her time at the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) was a defining chapter in her professional journey. Completing the Primary Teaching Course in 1991, Zamila describes it as a golden opportunity that equipped her with the knowledge, discipline, and values essential for both personal and professional growth.

Reflecting on her experience, Zamila recalls:

“The then ITE was the foundation and shaping of education in the Maldives. The ITE team set an unparalleled example of professionalism, friendship, love for work, and commitment to development. Working as part of this team was one of the proudest experiences of my career.”

The training and mentorship she received at ITE transformed her confidence, work ethic, and leadership,  qualities that continue to define her today.

In 2005, Zamila’s career took an inspiring turn when she was offered the opportunity to serve as an Environmental Educator for a project conducted by Live & Learn Environmental Education. Her passion for education and sustainability naturally aligned, allowing her to bridge environmental awareness with community engagement.

Over the years, she has served as an Environmental Education Consultant, leading projects in coordination and management that promote sustainable living and environmental protection. Today, Zamila Ahmed is the Country Manager of Live & Learn Maldives, where she continues to champion environmental education and sustainable development across the nation.

Beyond her leadership role, Zamila has contributed to numerous publications, books, and reports on environmental conservation and community resilience, sharing knowledge that inspires both students and professionals alike.

Nazleen Wafir

Leading with Purpose, Inspiring Through Action

Nazleen Wafir, affectionately known as Naz, began her journey in education after completing her Teacher Training Course at the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) now the Faculty of Education at the Maldives National University. This foundational experience sparked her lifelong dedication to teaching and educational leadership.

With a strong commitment to professional growth, Nazleen went on to complete her Master’s in Educational Leadership and Management, equipping her with the vision and skills to lead with purpose and compassion.

Today, Nazleen serves as the Principal of Aminiya School, one of the Maldives’ oldest and largest schools, home to over 2,200 students. Her leadership is marked by a focus on holistic education, environmental awareness, and student well-being. Under her guidance, Aminiya School has championed initiatives that promote eco-friendly learning environments and active lifestyles, creating spaces where students learn both inside and beyond the classroom.

Nazleen is also known for her personal discipline and balance. Despite her busy schedule, she makes time for her passions, photography, tree planting, and early morning runs around the city after dawn prayers. She believes that staying active is essential not only for physical health but also for clarity and focus in leadership.

Her philosophy is simple yet powerful: “No matter how busy you are, you can always make time for what truly matters.”

Ahmed Mujahid

Inspiring Leadership Rooted in Education

Ahmed Mujahid, a proud alumnus of the Maldives National University (MNU), stands as a shining example of dedication, leadership, and service in the field of education.

During his time at MNU, Mujahid was among the passionate students who took the initiative to revive the Faculty of Education Students’ Association, breathing new life into student activities and engagement. Under his leadership, the association successfully reintroduced sports tournaments, literary competitions, and the iconic Hawas Show, creating a vibrant campus community that inspired many.

Reflecting on his university days, Mujahid credits MNU for nurturing his passion for teaching and giving him the courage to pursue it as a lifelong career. After earning his first degree, he began teaching Physics and Mathematics at Iskandhar School, where his commitment to excellence quickly saw him rise through the ranks — from Leading Teacher to Deputy Principal, and later, Principal of Imadhuddin School.

Mujahid has also contributed to higher education as a part-time lecturer at the Faculty of Education, sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring teachers. Known for his integrity, diligence, and sense of responsibility, Mujahid continues to lead by example.

Today, he serves as the Deputy Minister of Education, where he remains committed to shaping the future of Maldivian education through innovation, inclusivity, and strong leadership.

Adam Azim

A Visionary Leader in Nation Building

Adam Azim, a distinguished alumnus of the Maldives National University (MNU), stands as one of the country’s most accomplished corporate leaders and a driving force in national development.

Azim began his educational journey at the Maldives Centre for Management and Administration, established in 1991 to strengthen the country’s private and public sector leadership. As part of the first batch of the Diploma in Accounting (Association of Accounting Technicians Program), Azim laid the foundation for what would become an extraordinary career in finance, management, and corporate leadership.

He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and Finance from the University of East London, followed by a Master of Business in Finance from the University of Nottingham, further refining his expertise in financial strategy and organizational management.

Over the past two decades, Azim has served in key leadership roles in some of the Maldives’ most prominent companies, including as Managing Director of State Trading Organization (STO) and Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), and as a Board Member of the Bank of Maldives and Maldives Structural Products.

Today, as the Chief Executive Officer of the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), Azim continues to play a vital role in the structural development and nation-building of the Maldives. Under his visionary leadership, MTCC has achieved record-breaking financial results and has become a benchmark of operational excellence and innovation in the country.

Azim’s journey reflects dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to national progress. The Maldives National University takes great pride in celebrating Adam Azim, a true leader whose work continues to shape the nation’s growth and inspire future generations.

Rinzi Ibrahim Waheed

Shaping Future Generations with Compassion and Integrity

Rinzi Ibrahim Waheed, a quiet yet deeply dedicated educator, is among the proud alumni of the Maldives National University (MNU) whose career reflects commitment, humility, and leadership in education.

After graduating from the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) in 1999, Rinzi went on to complete a Diploma in School Administration from the National Institute of Education, Sri Lanka, and later earned a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia.

Rinzi fondly recalls his time at ITE as transformative,  a period that taught him to be an environmentally conscious educator, a confident communicator, and a compassionate leader.

Today, Rinzi serves as the Principal of Hiriya School, leading a community of over 700 students with dedication and care. Over the years, he has held several key positions, including Primary Teacher, Leading Teacher, and Deputy Principal at Iskandhar School. Beyond administrative duties, Rinzi has long been a Cub Scout Leader, nurturing discipline, teamwork, and moral values among young learners.

For Rinzi, the greatest joy comes from seeing his students walk into school each morning with smiling faces, a reflection of a safe and happy learning environment he strives to create. His vision is to build a strong generation of students grounded in Islamic values, compassion, and curiosity.

Mohammed Shareef

A Lifelong Learner Dedicated to Service and Growth

Mohammed Shareef began his higher education journey over two decades ago at what is now the Maldives National University (MNU) Business School, formerly known as the Maldives Centre for Management. From 1997 to 2000, he completed the Association for Accounting Technicians (AAT) program — a qualification that laid the foundation for his long and meaningful career in public service.

Shareef’s professional journey began at the Maldives Customs Service, after which he served at the Holy Quran Center under the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. Since 2014, he has continued to contribute to the Ministry, demonstrating commitment and professionalism in every role he has undertaken.

Today, Shareef serves as the Deputy Director in the Administration Department at the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Studies (FHTS), MNU. His colleagues describe him as a dedicated and proactive individual, someone who takes pride in improving the workplace, fostering teamwork, and creating a sense of belonging among staff.

Beyond his administrative contributions, Sharif is also a strong advocate for health and well-being, actively promoting a healthy lifestyle among his peers.

Guided by the values instilled during his time at MNU, Mohammed Shareef continues to embody the spirit of lifelong learning, dedication, and service.

Rafiu Jameel

Building Responsible Generations Through Education

After completing his higher secondary education, Rafiu Jameel began his professional journey as a temporary Dhivehi teacher, marking the start of a lifelong dedication to education. His formal teaching career took shape when he completed the Diploma in Teaching Secondary, Economics at the Maldives College of Higher Education (now the Maldives National University) in 2006.

Following his service in his home island in Addu City, Rafiu moved to Malé in 2010 to pursue further studies. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the Open University of Malaysia, further strengthening his academic and leadership background.

Rafiu has held key positions in school management, including eight consecutive years at Addu High School, where he served with distinction. He later took on leadership roles as Principal in the atolls and Deputy Principal at Addu High School, contributing significantly to educational development at both local and national levels.

Currently, Rafiu is pursuing a Master of Educational Management at the University of Malaya, Malaysia, under the Principal Scholarship initiated by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, a testament to his continued commitment to professional growth.

Rafiu’s vision is to apply the knowledge and values gained through his education at the Maldives National University to nurture responsible, environmentally conscious, and morally grounded students. He believes that education should build both intellect and character, creating a generation deeply rooted in loyalty to their nation and faith.

Zeena Qasim

A Lifetime Devoted to Nurturing and Building Futures

After graduating from Aminiya School, Zeena Qasim began her lifelong journey in education and child development in 1991. Completing her teacher training at the Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) as an English-medium primary teacher, Zeena firmly believes that the foundation she received at ITE shaped her ability to “build people”,  a mission she continues to uphold with dedication and compassion.

Zeena’s commitment to continuous learning led her to pursue higher studies, earning a Diploma from the National Institute of Education (Sri Lanka), a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University, and a Master’s degree from the Open University of Malaysia. Each step strengthened her expertise and expanded her perspective on education and leadership.

Throughout her 26-year career, Zeena has played influential roles in some of the Maldives’ most respected schools. She served as a teacher at both Aminiya School and Majeediyya School, later taking on leadership roles as Deputy Principal of Majeediyya School, Acting Principal of Dharumavantha School, and Principal of Billabong High International School.

Today, Zeena continues her service to the nation in a different yet equally profound capacity,  leading the care and development of children under state protection at Fiyavathi in Hulhumalé. Her work focuses on nurturing, guiding, and empowering children to become capable and compassionate citizens.

Zeena credits her formative experience at ITE for equipping her with the strength, empathy, and leadership needed for this vital work. The Maldives National University is proud of Zeena Qasim’s enduring dedication to education, child welfare, and nation-building.

Abdul Nasir Mohamed

A Lifelong Educator and Community Leader

Abdul Nasir Mohamed credits the Primary Teaching Course he completed at the Teachers’ Education Centre in 1992 as the most transformative training of his life. He describes it as the foundation that shaped not only his professional identity but also his capacity to lead, serve, and inspire others within his community. The course, he says, trained both his mind and body to take on leadership roles, lessons that guided him to become a respected school leader and social leader in his island.

Today, Abdul Nasir serves as the Principal of Maafushi School, leading with dedication, empathy, and a deep sense of community. Beyond his role in education, he remains an active contributor to the social development of his hometown, Maafushi, where he continues to work tirelessly to uplift others.

Over his 30 years of service, Abdul Nasir has accumulated a wealth of lessons, skills, and experiences that reflect his belief in collaboration, patience, and perseverance in achieving common goals. His journey also reinforced his commitment to lifelong learning. During his professional career, he pursued further education at the Maldives National University, earning a Diploma in School Management, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, and a Master of Education.

Abdul Nasir proudly acknowledges that the Maldives National University has been the most influential institution in shaping his character, values, and leadership. His life and work stand as a testament to the power of education in transforming individuals and communities, a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
