As part of their assignment and to enrich their learning by connecting classroom concepts with real-world organisational practices, students from Advanced Certificate in Management semester 2, Advanced Certificate in Information Technology semester 2, Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) participated in a one-day field trip to Himmafushi. The visit provided valuable opportunities to observe business operations across different industries and gain practical insights into quality management, supply chain management and organisational practices.
During the field trip, students visited a fish processing factory, a water bottling company and several local guesthouses. These visits enabled them to examine how management principles are applied in practice, including employee motivation, workplace health and safety, operational efficiency, and customer service. By comparing organisational practices across the manufacturing, production and hospitality sectors, students were able to evaluate the effectiveness of different management approaches while strengthening their understanding of the Maldivian business environment and its diverse industries.
The field trip was organised by the Department of Management and the Department of Accounting and Finance, with participation from 6 staff and 41 students from the Department of Management, and 2 staff and 9 students from the Department of Accounting and Finance. The initiative contributed to SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
Feedback from students was very positive, with many indicating that the field trip enabled them to relate classroom concepts to real-world organisational practices. Overall, the visit had a positive educational impact by providing students with practical learning experiences that strengthened their understanding of organisational practices and their application in real business settings.
