Students at Jamaaludheen School received a firsthand lesson in marine conservation, as the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at The Maldives National University led an awareness session on the country’s marine environment and the importance of protecting it. The session formed part of the school’s broader educational exposure activities and aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the fragile ecosystems that surround the Maldives and the role young people can play in safeguarding them.
CFOS academics introduced students to key concepts in marine science, including the structure and function of coral reef ecosystems, the importance of marine biodiversity, and the pressing threats facing Maldivian waters such as coral bleaching, pollution, and overfishing. The session was designed to be interactive, encouraging students to ask questions and connect classroom science to the living environment beyond their island shores.
The awareness programme aligns with CFOS’s broader mission to promote ocean literacy and cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens. As the Maldives’ leading institution for marine science education, the college offers programmes in marine biology, fisheries management, aquaculture, and oceanography, and has increasingly engaged in outreach activities aimed at schools and communities across the atolls.
