Students from the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) at the Maldives National University visited the Marine Discovery Centre at CROSSROADS Maldives, gaining hands-on exposure to one of the country’s leading coral conservation facilities. The Marine Discovery Centre, located at The Marina @ CROSSROADS, serves as a pioneering conservation hub dedicated to preserving the Maldives’ marine ecosystem. The facility features a marine biology laboratory and coral propagation facilities offering interactive activities such as coral nursery exploration and marine conservation programmes.
During the visit, students learned about the centre’s coral propagation initiatives, which involve environmentally friendly fragmentation techniques to rehabilitate damaged reefs. Students also gained insight into how resident marine biologists conduct research and longitudinal studies on sea-life and coral propagation.
The visit formed part of CFOS’s commitment to experiential learning, offering students direct exposure to conservation practices that bridge scientific research with practical application. CROSSROADS Maldives has achieved Green Globe Certification for its environmental practices, with the Marine Discovery Centre playing a key role in driving its social and environmental efforts
