The Faculty of Arts, Maldives National University, in collaboration with the Maldives Library Association, established the Capacity Building Fellowship for Library and Information Science (LIS) students and in-service library professionals participating in the Professional Development Workshop on Library and Information Services (PDWL) 2026.
The fellowship initiative was developed to increase access to international professional development opportunities by providing partial financial support to selected participants attending the programme in Australia in September 2026. Through collaborative fundraising by the Faculty of Arts and the Maldives Library Association, the initiative seeks to reduce financial barriers that may otherwise limit participation in international learning and professional development.
By enabling LIS students and practising library professionals to gain international exposure, exchange knowledge and develop professional capabilities, the fellowship supports the strengthening of the library and information services sector in the Maldives. Participants will have opportunities to learn from international practices and bring relevant ideas, knowledge and perspectives back to their workplaces and communities.
The initiative also promotes more inclusive access to professional development by supporting participants from different backgrounds and career stages. By investing in the skills and capabilities of current and future information professionals, the fellowship contributes to lifelong learning, professional growth and the development of a resilient workforce.
The initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education, 5: Gender Equality, 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, 10: Reduced Inequalities, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
