MNU Students Host Public Forum to Mark International Democracy Day

14 September 2024

To mark International Democracy Day, students of The Maldives National University (MNU) spearheaded a public forum at Rasfannu, creating an open platform for students, lecturers and members of the public to engage in discussions on democratic governance and civic participation.

The student-led initiative provided an opportunity to extend discussions on democratic principles beyond the university classroom and engage the wider community. Through the public forum, participants were encouraged to explore the importance of civic awareness, inclusive participation and informed engagement in democratic processes.

The initiative also demonstrated the role of university students in sharing knowledge with the wider community. By engaging members of the public in discussions on democratic governance, students applied their academic learning in a community setting while developing their communication, public engagement and civic participation skills.

The forum highlighted the importance of informed and inclusive participation in strengthening democratic institutions. It provided a space for dialogue and learning, encouraging participants to develop a greater understanding of their role in contributing to their communities and public life.

The activity directly supports SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through its focus on democratic governance, civic awareness, inclusive participation and public engagement. It also contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by extending learning beyond the classroom and providing students with practical opportunities to apply academic knowledge, develop civic and communication skills, and share knowledge with the wider community.
