The Maldives National University (MNU) Library has strengthened Saruna, the MNU Digital Repository, through a major upgrade to the latest version of the DSpace platform in 2025. The upgrade represents an important step in enhancing the preservation, accessibility and visibility of Maldivian academic and cultural knowledge.
Saruna is an open-access digital repository established to preserve and provide wider access to Maldivian knowledge resources, including research publications, theses, e-books, multimedia resources and local literature. It serves as an important platform for making locally produced scholarly and cultural content accessible to students, academics, researchers and the wider community.
The DSpace upgrade has introduced enhanced functionality and improved search and navigation capabilities. A major redesign of the front-end interface has also provided Saruna with a more modern and visually engaging appearance, including the display of publication cover pages, making it easier for users to discover and explore digital resources.
Through Saruna, MNU Library continues to support open access to knowledge, long-term digital preservation and increased visibility of Maldivian scholarship and cultural heritage. The Library also continues to promote the repository among MNU staff and students, researchers, institutions and the wider community to encourage greater use and contribution of locally significant materials.
