The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) conducted a mental health awareness session for parents at HA. Hoarafushi School on 12 September 2024, focusing on understanding children’s mental health and ways parents can provide appropriate support.
The session was facilitated by Dr. Aishath Shanoora and Mariyam Ifshan and provided parents with an opportunity to strengthen their understanding of children’s mental health and the importance of recognising concerns at an early stage.
The session highlighted practical approaches that parents can use to support their children’s emotional wellbeing. It encouraged parents to be attentive to changes in their children’s emotional and behavioural wellbeing, create supportive opportunities for communication, and respond appropriately when children experience difficulties.
Early recognition and appropriate support can play an important role in helping children access assistance when needed. The session also emphasised the importance of seeking professional help when concerns require additional support, helping parents better understand their role within a wider network of care.
The initiative strengthened engagement between The Maldives National University (MNU) and HA. Hoarafushi School, while extending mental health education to the wider school community. Engaging parents alongside students and teachers supports a more coordinated approach to promoting children’s wellbeing across both home and school environments.
The session contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through its focus on children’s mental health and emotional wellbeing, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by supporting the wellbeing of learners, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between MNU and Hoarafushi School.
