The “No Cap, Just Facts” Forum was a student-led initiative organised by students of the Bachelor of Arts in Media and Public Relations programme at the Faculty of Arts, The Maldives National University (MNU), focusing on critical thinking, responsible communication, and awareness of the challenges associated with misinformation and disinformation.
The forum provided a platform for students to explore the importance of accurate information, media literacy, responsible communication, and informed decision-making in an increasingly digital information environment. Through discussions and engagement, the initiative encouraged participants to critically assess information, recognise the potential impact of misleading content, and consider their responsibilities when creating and sharing information.
The initiative also provided students with an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to a real-world communication issue. Through planning and implementing the forum, students developed practical skills in research, strategic communication, teamwork, coordination, public engagement, and event management.
By bringing attention to the challenges posed by misinformation and disinformation, the forum encouraged more responsible information practices and digital citizenship. It highlighted the importance of verifying information, communicating responsibly, and engaging with information critically before making decisions or sharing content with others.
The forum also demonstrated the role of communication education in addressing contemporary challenges within society. By connecting classroom learning with public awareness and engagement, the initiative supported students in developing professional competencies while contributing to a more informed and digitally responsible community.
The “No Cap, Just Facts” Forum contributed to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through critical thinking, media literacy, and experiential learning; SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through engagement with digital communication and information technologies; SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through promoting informed and accessible engagement with information; SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) through responsible communication, informed decision-making, and public awareness; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaborative student engagement and knowledge sharing.
