The Maldives National University celebrated Dhivehi Dhuvas 2026 under the theme “Tourism and Maldivian Identity,” bringing together 215 students for a meaningful celebration of the Dhivehi language, literature, culture, and Maldivian identity.
The celebration aimed to strengthen students’ appreciation of the Dhivehi language and cultural heritage while encouraging reflection on the relationship between tourism and Maldivian identity. The theme provided a platform for students to explore the importance of preserving the Dhivehi language, traditions, and cultural heritage, and their role in shaping and sustaining the identity of the Maldives.
As part of the celebration, students enrolled in “Dhivehi for Professionals” participated in a range of literary and cultural activities and competitions. The activities provided students with practical opportunities to apply their linguistic knowledge and skills while fostering creativity, communication, teamwork, and cultural appreciation. The activities also formed part of the students’ academic assessment, connecting classroom learning with experiential and interactive learning.
The initiative contributed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Through experiential learning, students strengthened their language, communication, and creative skills, supporting quality education (SDG 4). The focus on Dhivehi language and cultural heritage also contributed to preserving and promoting Maldivian identity and cultural heritage (SDG 11). The active participation and collaboration among the Department, students, and the wider University community further reflected the importance of partnerships in advancing shared educational and cultural goals (SDG 17). Together, these goals demonstrate how education, cultural preservation, and collaboration can work together to support sustainable development and strengthen cultural identity.
The students actively participated in various competitions and literary activities designed to encourage creativity, communication, teamwork, and appreciation of the Dhivehi language and Maldivian culture. The activities provided a platform for students to engage with their cultural heritage in an interactive and meaningful way.
The celebration concluded with an award ceremony recognising the outstanding achievements of students who excelled in the various competitions. High-achieving participants were presented with trophies in recognition of their efforts, creativity, and accomplishments.
Through Dhivehi Dhuvas 2026, MNU brought together academic learning, experiential education, cultural preservation, and collaborative engagement. The celebration highlighted the importance of nurturing appreciation for the Dhivehi language and Maldivian heritage while demonstrating the interconnected role of education, sustainable communities, and partnerships in safeguarding Maldivian identity for future generations.
