FHS Secures Research Grant to Study Mental Health Among Maldivian Adults

01 April 2024

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has secured a research grant to undertake a study titled “Prevalence and Sociodemographic Correlates of Mental Health Issues among Maldivian Adults.”

The research team comprises Afaa Mohamed, Mariyam Ifshan Ahmed, Unaisa Saud and Dr. Aishath Shanoora. The study will examine the prevalence and distribution of mental health issues among adults in the Maldives, while also exploring their relationship with relevant sociodemographic characteristics.

The study will generate locally relevant evidence on mental health among the Maldivian adult population. Such evidence can provide a stronger foundation for understanding the scale and distribution of mental health issues and identifying patterns that may be relevant to mental health planning and service development.

Findings from the research are expected to contribute to evidence-informed approaches to mental health policy, service planning and targeted interventions in the Maldives. Locally generated research can also support a clearer understanding of the population’s needs and inform future research and professional practice.

In addition to contributing to the national evidence base, the project will strengthen research capacity within the department by providing opportunities for researchers to undertake systematic investigation of an important public health issue.

The research initiative reflects FHS’s commitment to generating knowledge that addresses national health priorities and contributes to the development of evidence-informed mental health services in the Maldives.

The project contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through its focus on mental health, SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening research and knowledge development, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaborative research and knowledge generation.
