The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has advanced the development of a Master’s programme in Elderly Care, with the programme coursework receiving approval from the Faculty Academic Committee (FAC) in February.

The proposed postgraduate programme is designed to strengthen the capacity of the health and social care sector to respond to the evolving needs of the Maldives’ ageing population. It aims to equip professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in elderly care, supporting the delivery of quality, evidence-based and person-centred services for older adults.

As the population ages, health and social care professionals require specialised knowledge to address the diverse physical, psychological and social needs associated with later life. The Master’s programme will provide an opportunity for professionals to develop advanced competencies in elderly care while strengthening their ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.

The programme is also expected to support improved care for older adults and their families by developing a workforce equipped to respond to age-related needs and promote healthy ageing. By strengthening professional capacity within the sector, the programme can contribute to the development of sustainable care services for older people across the Maldives.

The development of the Master’s in Elderly Care reflects FHS’s commitment to expanding postgraduate education in areas of emerging national need and preparing a skilled workforce capable of contributing to the health and wellbeing of communities.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), particularly through its focus on accessible quality care, advanced professional education, equitable support for older adults and strengthened collaboration across the health and social care sectors.
