ARC113 & ARC207 - Field Trip to F. Magoodhoo

Posted on 14-21 September 2024

Architecture students undertook a field trip to F. Magoodhoo, Faafu Atoll, from 14th to 21st September to bridge the gap between theory and practice and support their studio projects. Fifty students from Architectural Design 4 and Culture 2, accompanied by three lecturers, conducted a collaborative study of the island’s built environment, community design, cultural heritage, and behavioral patterns.

Students collected data through site observations, stakeholder interviews, and comparative studies with a neighboring island. The trip provided insights into local infrastructure, public spaces, traditions, passive design techniques, and community needs. Findings from the fieldwork helped students refine their design proposals by integrating architectural, cultural, and social perspectives. The experience strengthened students’ understanding of sustainable island development, cultural preservation, and the role of architecture in enhancing community life.

The field trip aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing students with experiential, research-based learning that connects architectural theory with real-world community and environmental contexts. It supports SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by encouraging innovative, context-sensitive design approaches and greater understanding of local infrastructure and passive design techniques. The activity contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting sustainable island development, preservation of cultural heritage, and community-responsive design. It supports SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the exploration of passive design strategies, locally appropriate materials, and resource-conscious architectural approaches. Finally, it advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by engaging students, lecturers, community stakeholders, and local residents in collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and design development.
