Third-year Architecture students from the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Technology (FEST) participated in a field trip to AA. Thoddoo from 22–29 February to gain hands-on experience in research, data collection, and resilient architectural design. Students studied the island’s natural and built environment, assessed environmental risks, documented architectural and cultural features, and engaged with community members and stakeholders. The collected data supported Design Studio 5 projects on resilient housing and masterplanning, as well as Environment and Culture 5 research, providing students with valuable practical experience in sustainable design, community engagement, and evidence-based decision-making.
The field trip aligns with SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) by developing students’ capacity to apply innovative, evidence-based approaches to resilient architectural design and planning. It supports SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through research on sustainable housing, masterplanning, cultural heritage, and community needs. The activity contributes to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by assessing environmental risks and incorporating climate resilience into design solutions, while supporting SDG 14 (Life Below Water) through awareness of the island’s coastal and marine environment and its protection. It also advances SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by engaging students with community members and local stakeholders to support collaborative, context-sensitive development.
