Medical Science Seminar Session 1

Posed on 30 September 2025

The first session of the Medical Science Seminar was presented by Aishath Majidha Hassan, Senior Lecturer from Department of Medical Sciences.
the topic was “the immunological imperative of quality sleep”. The talk shed light on how sleep deprivation impairs immune function, evidenced from recent studies and how chronic insomnia results in changes in cellular and humoral components of the immune system and its correlation with clinical infections. Furthermore, the talk highlighted the role of sleep deprivation on activating the release of inflammatory cytokine, resulting in neuroinflammation and contributing to learning abilities and memory. Prioritize sleep not just for rest, but as a fundamental biological mandate for a strong, healthy immune system and a sharp mind.

The Medical Science Seminar enhanced participants’ understanding of the important role of quality sleep in maintaining immune function, reducing inflammation, and supporting cognitive health. By sharing evidence-based research on sleep deprivation and its impact on immunity, infections, learning, and memory, the session promoted healthy lifestyle practices and scientific awareness. The activity contributed to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through health promotion and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by facilitating the dissemination of current medical and scientific knowledge.
