Distinguished Maldivian author, translator, columnist and veteran journalist Abdulla Farooq Hassan (ޢަބްދުﷲ ފާރޫޤު ޙަސަން) has generously donated three of his recently published titles to the Maldives National University (MNU) Library.
Abdulla Farooq Hassan is widely recognised for his extensive contributions to Dhivehi literature and journalism, particularly for making works on Islamic history, biography, ethics and social issues accessible to Dhivehi readers. He began translating books in 1972, primarily from Urdu into Dhivehi, and has since published more than 60 titles.
In addition to his translations, he has authored original books, essays, historical accounts, newspaper columns and articles addressing Islamic history and civilisation, faith, humanitarian service, Maldivian history and society, language and communication, politics, and national affairs.
Among his notable publications are Abu Bakuruh Al-Sidhdheeq Raliallahu Anhu, Uthmaan Bin Affaan Raliallahu Anhu, Thohiru Ahlubaithun, Nabavee Seerathaai Mi Zamaanuge Massalathah, Islaam Dheenuge Nazarugai Insaanee Khidhumaiy, Aharemen Ikhthiyaaru Kuree Enme Maaiy Dheen, Islaam Dheen—Rashvehi Dhuniyeyge Maesthiri and Kaamiyaabuge Sirru.
Abdulla Farooq Hassan also has a longstanding association with Maldivian journalism. He was among those involved in the establishment and early operation of the Haveeru News Agency during the early 1980s. Throughout his distinguished career, he has written extensively for Maldivian newspapers such as Sun, Miadhu, including online news platforms on religion, history, society, politics and matters of national importance.
His contributions to Dhivehi literature, translation and journalism have received significant national recognition. He received the National Award for Encouragement for translation into Dhivehi in 1985 and the National Award for Encouragement for Dhivehi writing in 1990. In 2004, he was presented with the National Award of Honour for his service to Dhivehi literature. In 2018, he received the Diamond Pen of Honour in recognition of his contribution to journalism.
He is also a significant contributor to Saruna, the Maldives National University’s Digital Repository, having generously provided a substantial collection of his writings and monographs for digital preservation and public access. The collection serves as a valuable source of knowledge on Islamic history, religion, Maldivian society, culture, literature and national affairs.
Abdulla Farooq Hassan’s contribution represents far more than a donation of publications. It reflects his enduring commitment to preserving, sharing and advancing Maldivian knowledge for present and future generations.
