Hawwa Zahira

Biography

Hawwa Zahira is a Lecturer at the Educational Studies Department of Maldives National University (MNU). She has completed her Master of Special Education/Postgraduate Diploma in Special Education from the University of Waikato (New Zealand), Bachelor of Arts in Education from Macquarie University (Australia), and Diploma in Educational Studies from the University of Leeds (UK).

Made significant contributions to strengthening the national teaching workforce through the design and delivery of Early Childhood, Primary, and Secondary teacher education programmes, and through the development of Educational Studies curricula.

At UNICEF Maldives, contributed to research and programme development, supporting child protection and the well-being of women. This included working with Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), developing parent training packages, and generating evidence to inform policies and programmes for children and families in the Maldives.  

As a member of the Disability Council, contributed to advocating and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through the development and review of policies, regulations, monitoring frameworks, and resource materials supporting inclusive practices and the disability community in the Maldives.

Research Work

Hawwa Zahira have not conducted any research on her own, except for her thesis, but have contributed to work at UNICEF, mostly for internal purposes. Two of the most recent contributions include: 

2022 – with Villa College Institute for Research and Innovation (IRI) for UNICEF Maldives: Qualitative study on exploring Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) on parenting and child rights.
