14 December 2025

The Maldives National University (MNU) officially launched its Strategic Plan 2026–2030 today at a formal ceremony held at the Central Administration of The Maldives National University. This event marks a significant milestone in the University’s continued commitment to academic excellence, research, student empowerment, national development, and institutional sustainability.

The MNU Strategic Plan 2026–2030 outlines the University’s strategic direction for the next five years, providing a comprehensive framework to guide growth across teaching and learning, research and innovation, governance, student empowerment and excellence, community engagement, sustainable development, and other key institutional priorities. Developed through extensive consultation with stakeholders, the Strategic Plan reflects MNU’s evolving role as the nation’s leading higher education institution.

At the core of the Strategic Plan are ten strategic goals that collectively focus on advancing academic excellence, strengthening research and innovation, enhancing the Maldivian identity within higher education, empowering people to achieve excellence, building a sustainable and resilient university, strengthening governance and leadership, widening engagement with society, fostering a conducive work and learning environment, enhancing student-centred excellence, and expanding national, regional, and international engagement. These goals are also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam highlighted that the launch not only introduces the new plan but also recognizes the dedication of MNU’s staff and students, celebrates achievements made despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and sets clear goals for the next five years.

Under the Strategic Plan 2020–2025, MNU strengthened governance and quality assurance, expanded access to higher education nationwide, and significantly enhanced research and postgraduate programs. Notable achievements include the introduction of sixteen new PhD programs, the establishment of new faculties such as Agriculture, Fisheries, and Security Studies, and initiatives like the MNU Innovate Hub to promote innovation and industry collaboration.

The University has also invested in staff and student development through expanded PhD scholarships, international training opportunities, improved teaching and learning practices, and enhanced student engagement, including the introduction of a student club policy and plans for a student union. The Strategic Plan emphasizes strengthening human potential, equipping students with future-ready skills, and ensuring MNU’s continued leadership in higher education for the benefit of the nation and the region.

The Strategic Plan 2026–2030 builds upon the achievements of the previous planning cycle, the MNU Strategic Plan 2020–2025, while addressing emerging opportunities and challenges in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape. It places strong emphasis on quality, relevance, inclusivity, sustainability, and partnership-driven growth.

The launch of the Strategic Plan reaffirms MNU’s commitment to advancing knowledge, academic excellence, research and innovation, digital advancement, strengthening national development, and inspiring the next generation of Maldivian leaders. The University will now move into the implementation phase, translating the strategic goals into actionable initiatives across its colleges, faculties, centers, schools, campuses, and administrative units.
