In a continuation of its successful Lunchtime Talk Series aimed at promoting research and knowledge exchange, The Maldives National University (MNU) hosted a thought-provoking session on September 29, 2026. The talk, titled “Woman in the Light of Qur’an and International Conventions: A Critical Study,” was presented by Dr. Mohamed Mursaleen, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Shariah and Law.

The session provided an informative and critical review of the status of women as framed in both Islamic scripture and international legal frameworks. Dr. Mursaleen’s presentation delved into a comparative analysis, offering a nuanced perspective on a topic of significant contemporary relevance. The event was open to all MNU staff and students, fostering an inclusive environment for academic dialogue.

The talk directly aligns with SDG 4, Quality Education by contributing to education research and promoting inclusive learning on crucial social issues. It also supported SDG 5, Gender Equality by facilitating academic discussion on women’s rights, non-discrimination, and equal opportunity through a scholarly lens. Furthermore, by encouraging cross-sectoral dialogue and knowledge sharing within the university and beyond, the session embodied the spirit of SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals.

The event was met with high engagement, with 30 participants attending. Attendees were highly interactive and provided positive feedback, underscoring the university’s commitment to addressing complex global issues through academic inquiry and open discussion. The session was not only an educational opportunity for MNU’s community but also a step forward in fostering evidence-based discourse on gender equality in the Maldivian context.
