The Maldives National University (MNU), through its Training and Development Unit, has strengthened its focus on educational quality and international standards by organising the SSAPI Project Training Workshop, aimed at enhancing staff understanding of accreditation processes, international accreditation requirements, and institutional quality assurance practices.
Facilitated by Professor Carla Sofia from the University of Évora, Portugal, the workshop provided an opportunity for MNU staff to explore the principles and requirements of international accreditation. The programme highlighted the importance of understanding external quality standards and their relevance to institutional development, academic credibility, and continuous improvement in higher education.
A central focus of the training was familiarising participants with accreditation processes and guidelines. The workshop explored how accreditation frameworks can inform institutional planning, support systematic quality assurance, and help universities evaluate their educational practices against established expectations.
Selecting suitable international accreditation bodies was another key component of the programme. The session encouraged staff to consider the relevance of different accreditation requirements to MNU’s academic and institutional context, recognising that informed selection is essential when pursuing external quality recognition.
The workshop also emphasised the importance of aligning accreditation expectations with institutional needs and priorities. By examining how international standards relate to university operations, the programme aimed to strengthen staff awareness of the responsibilities involved in maintaining educational quality and preparing for potential accreditation processes.
Beyond technical accreditation requirements, the initiative highlighted the value of international knowledge exchange in strengthening higher education institutions. Professor Carla Sofia’s contribution from the University of Évora provided an opportunity to engage with perspectives from an international academic setting and consider their relevance to MNU’s quality assurance efforts.
The training further underscored the role of staff capacity development in sustaining institutional improvement. A clearer understanding of accreditation standards and procedures can support more informed planning, stronger internal coordination, and greater consistency in quality assurance activities across university services.
Organised as part of MNU’s ongoing professional development efforts, the SSAPI Project Training Workshop reflects the university’s emphasis on building institutional knowledge and strengthening readiness to engage with international quality frameworks. The programme aimed to support thoughtful decision-making and continued improvement rather than treating accreditation as a standalone administrative exercise.
Aligned with priorities of quality education, lifelong learning, professional capacity development, international knowledge sharing, institutional accountability, strong educational institutions, and continuous quality improvement, the workshop demonstrates MNU’s commitment to strengthening educational standards and fostering internationally informed approaches to institutional development.
