A special session on responsible sports fishing was conducted for A-Level students at MNU, led by Ahmed Ashwaq of Sonee Fishing and organized by CFOS under an MOU with Sonee Fishing.
The session introduced students to the principles and practices of sustainable sports fishing, emphasizing the importance of responsible angling for marine ecosystem health. Topics covered included catch-and-release techniques, species identification, and the role of sports fishing in supporting conservation efforts.
Sonee Fishing has a strong track record of supporting marine education and research in the Maldives. The company partnered with the Maldives National University to hold a seminar on fisheries culture, sharing insights on traditional and modern fishing practices. Sonee Fishing also organizes the annual “Kandu Foari” sports fishing tournament, which promotes sustainable fishing practices and shares catch data with the CFOS of MNU to support fisheries research.
The session provided CHSE students with valuable practical exposure to responsible fishing practices, complementing their academic studies in Marine Science and preparing them for potential careers in marine research, conservation, and sustainable fisheries management.
