Head of Centre for Maritime Studies

Biography

Mohamed Zaid is a qualified foreign-going Master mariner with long maritime experience at management levels on global trading vessels with multinational crews.

His maritime career started in the 90s as a deck cadet with Maldives National Shipping Limited. After having completed the required sea service of 36 months, He then joined the LBS College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research in Mumbai, India to complete the first STCW competency examination for a navigating officer.
He began his service as a Second Mate on the fleet of Maldives National Shipping Limited in 1998 and then continued as a Junior Officer on bulk carriers of Oldendorff Carriers, Germany.

During the seagoing tenure, to ensure professional competence, He completed various professional development programs in safety and environmental management, ship handling, and navigation. Many of the training programs were carried out with online Learning Management Systems of respective shipping companies.

His professional sailing experience at management levels includes dry-docking of vessels, shipyard delivery of new-build vessels, statutory ship surveys, ISM/ISO/audits, Port State Control inspections including US Coast Guard inspections.

In the academic field, He began teaching as a visiting lecturer at the Centre for Maritime Studies, The Maldives National University (CMS, MNU) in 2006 and continued teaching maritime education courses for CMS, MNU, and private institutes whenever shore-based.

Since July 2020, He continues to lead the Centre for Maritime Studies, The Maldives National University as the Head of Centre.
