Vice Chancellor

Biography

Dr Mohamed Shareef was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Maldives National University in August 2019. The Vice-Chancellor serves as the academic leader and chief executive, accountable for strategic oversight, financial sustainability, and academic direction of the University.

His research interests were nurtured at the University of Liverpool’s Department of Civil Engineering. In 2015 he took up a post in MNU as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University, with the research and development portfolio. Shareef has experience working in the private sector, including planning, designing, and supervising coastal engineering projects throughout the Maldives.

His area of expertise is the practical application of cutting-edge shore protection practices and schemes, as well as maritime engineering design. He has served extensively for the Government of the Maldives holding senior executive positions in the Ministry of Planning and National Development and Ministry of Housing and Environment.

Dr Shareef earned a PhD in Civil Engineering and an MSc (Eng) in Maritime Civil Engineering from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, as well as a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Brighton in the United Kingdom.
